Timothy Kinnit needs the help of private detective Albert Campion. Kinnit is rich, handsome and successful, but his past is a mystery to him. When he learns, on the eve of his elopement, that he is adopted he must question everything he thought he knew. In desperate search of answers, Kinnit calls on Campion to shed some light on his past, and how it connects him to the notorious Turk Street Mile slum. Meanwhile, his illustrious adopted family has a sinister secret of its own – involving a murderous nineteenth-century governess – that must also be brought to light by Campion’s investigations.

The China Governess A Campion Mystery Margery Allingham 9781911295242 Books

This is not prime Allingham but still a book her regular readers will want to read and new readers should enjoy. As was increasingly true as the series ran into its last years, Mr. Campion increasingly fades into the background. In point of fact, in this one, the Governess, the one who nurtured the young hero almost from birth, is the most prominent and interesting character. The story is somewhat muddled but at the core is the very young couple who want to marry but are being kept apart by whispers about him and the family into which he was adopted. For them to marry requires that a clean slate be brought to the girls father which would attest to her husband-to-be's derivation, place in the world. Campion is brought into the situation and, in turn, coopts his police friend into the matter. There is a complexity of paternities, lost and false identities, which contribute to some confusion for the reader.
All in all, an enjoyable, but not notable, outing for one of the Mistresses of the Classic British Crime Novel.

Typically wonderful Allingham.
Fun with Albert and a young couple trying to discovery the old family mysteries. Enjoyable read and a wonderful nanny character.
I did not get this book
I have read Mystery writers for fifty years and have always preferred the British. But not this one! The story and plot were just plain uninteresting and there was really no excitement in the characterization, plot, and ending. Finished with the feeling I could have spent this reading time much more enjoyably with a different book!
I discovered Campion through the show and enjoyed them so much. But the books are so much better! Campion and Lugg are amazing characters! This mystery goes so many places it keeps you guessing but you do not get lost.
Sadly, this is one of the last books of the Campion series; I'm going to really miss these books when I've finished. Sigh. Oh well, I suppose that's why I keep these things forever so that someday I can go back and reread them. In the prologue, a council flat is vandalized to such an extent that it gives one of its occupants a fatal stroke upon her discovery of the damage. Then on to the main part of the novel Timothy Kinnit and Julia Laurell are a young couple engaged to be married. Both are from upper class families, and are happy as can be. However, Julia's father decides that the marriage will not happen, due to rumors that are being passed along about Tim's parentage. Although Julia does not care, Tim is determined to seek the truth about his identity, but as he investigates he runs up against several obstacles -- and needs the help of Albert Campion. Once again we find Campion in the background, not as active as in the earlier part of the series -- here lending his cool-headedness and deductive prowess. However, the story was quite good, but then at the end I got a bit confused and had to backtrack to figure out what it was I missed. I love these books, but sometimes they can get bogged down with dialogue that detracts from the main part of the story. I'd recommend it to classic mystery fans, those who like British mysteries and those who are considering the series. However, to the latter I say do NOT start with this one, but go back and start with the first one so you can watch the development of Campion's character. Personally, I liked him better in the older books.
The story opens with Timothy Kinnet deep in a personal crisis. Tim is a decent well-bred young fellow — rich and lucky in love. But he’s just found out he’s adopted, and that his antecedents may be traceable to a vicious London slum.

This was in the chaotic period during World War II when children were being evacuated in droves to the country to avoid the London bombings. With his origins unknown, Tim feels lacking an identity and fears he may even have bad genes. His perspective father-in-law is investigating his ancestry. So is Tim’s adoptive family. Only his fiancée is indifferent to his parentage. She’s just in love.

The plot is seething with family secrets — some of them having to do with governesses and murder. With the exception of the straightforward young people, almost every character is an eccentric of sorts. And that includes the police inspectors and their cohort Albert Campion, gentleman sleuth.

Perhaps the most entertaining character is Nanny Broome, an energetic family retainer who takes charge whenever things go off the rails. (Which they do quite regularly.)

Margery Allingham has a style rather like her sleuth Campion — vague, disjointed and exuding innuendo. I find it hard to follow at times, but the basic storyline here is so good that I enjoyed The China Governess very much.
